Koova Launches All-New “Spoke Length Calculator”

Make Wheelbuilding Easier Than Ever
As a professional manufacturer of mountain bike hubs, Koova is proud to introduce the brand-new Spoke Length Calculator, designed to help wheel builders, bike shop mechanics, and DIY enthusiasts calculate spoke lengths with precision and ease.
But the calculator is not just a convenience—it’s built on a deep understanding of how hub and rim dimensions work together to determine correct spoke lengths and types, especially for Koova’s signature S10 hub series. In wheel building, choosing the correct spoke length and lacing pattern is crucial to ensuring strength, ride quality, and long-term durability.
Why Spoke Length and Type Matter
In bicycle assembly and maintenance, the selection of spoke length and type is key to a wheel’s stability, strength, and riding performance. Spokes not only absorb impact during riding but also maintain the structural integrity of the wheel during rotation.
When calculating spoke length, the most critical factors include:
- Hub dimensions: center-to-flange distance, hub width (e.g. 135mm or 142mm on TS100), number of holes, and flange diameter
- Rim size and ERD: e.g. 26”, 27.5” (650B), or 29” (700C), each affecting spoke length differently
- Lacing pattern: 3-cross (3x) is typically recommended for TS100 hubs, balancing strength and rigidity
For example, 26” rims are agile and suited for short spokes with 3x lacing. 27.5” rims have become very popular in MTB and require slightly longer spokes. 29” rims are common in cross-country or trail bikes, needing even longer, stronger spokes and often benefit from 4x lacing.
Koova’s S10 rear hub is typically laced with 32 spokes in a 3x pattern. With the hub’s flange diameter, offset, and center distance known, you can use the Pythagorean theorem to determine precise spoke length when paired with the chosen rim.
One-Click Presets – No Need to Manually Enter Hub Specs
To make this technical process easier and more accurate, the Koova Spoke Length Calculator comes with built-in presets for multiple Koova hub models, including:
- S10, S10B, S60, and S60B – front and rear
- User-Define Mode – for custom wheel builds or non-Koova hubs
Simply select your model from the "Model" dropdown, and the app will auto-fill all necessary hub values like flange diameter (PCD), center offset, and hole count. Then input your rim’s ERD and preferred lacing pattern to get instant left and right spoke lengths.
J-Bend & Straight-Pull Supported – Designed for Modern MTB Builds
The interface is divided into left and right sections for accurate spoke length calculation on both sides of the hub. The tool supports both J-bend and straight-pull spokes
Whether you’re building a high-end 29er race wheel or replacing spokes on your daily trail bike, Koova’s calculator eliminates the guesswork and helps you achieve perfect tension and alignment on your first try.
